Huanui College had 17 students compete at Maadi Cup last week, held at Lake Karapiro, Cambridge. Maadi Cup is the NZSS Rowing Nationals which is held over 6 days and is the biggest secondary school’s event in the country with over 2,600 rowers entered from 130 schools.
Of our 17 rowers, 3 crews made A finals and 6 crews made B finals which places them in the top 16 per event in NZ. On top of this feat, we can proudly announce that Will Tattersfield won Bronze in the BU17 Single Sculls and has been selected to trial at the upcoming NI v SI U18’s being held later in April.
Other highlights of the week came from Lauren Storey and Lucy Nichols making the A final of the Girls U18 Novice Double sculls, placing 8th , and Will and Ryan Smith placing 5th in their A Final of the Boys U17 Double Sculls.
Of the B finals, Connan Wiegersma placed 1st in the Boys U16 Single Sculls; Elise Pickford and Gracie Potter placed 2nd in the Girls U15 Double Sculls, and Stan Parker and Connan placed 3rd in the Boys U16 Double Sculls. Overall, the week was a huge success for one of the smallest schools at the regatta with 12 of the team being made up of novice girls in their first year of rowing.
Special mention needs to go to the Coach, Spencer Nichols, for his ongoing dedication and countless hours he has spent getting these crews ready to race.
