An analysis of school leaver’s nationwide in 2025 has been released recently. This data ranks all schools based on the percentage of students attaining University Entrance. The leavers data includes all students who began a school year and leave during, or at the end of the year, from any year level, and do not enrol in another New Zealand school.
The analysis assumes that University Entrance is the only valid school qualification and it is the one that provides the most future options and, on average, students leaving school with it earn significantly more. Modelling conducted by the Ministry of Education in 2024 of earnings at age 30 showed income premiums for those attaining an NCEA Level 2 qualification; a Level 3 qualification, or for meeting the requirements for University Entrance. These were 10k higher for learners with a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification and 23k higher for learners with University Entrance, compared to those with no qualification.
